Connection Rules Everything Around Me: Using the Power of Relationships to Transcend and Transform with Dr. Shaun Woodly

Grades PreK-12

How can we not just tell, but show our students that in our classroom, they are welcomed and that they are safe? What impactful ways can we communicate to our minority students “I see you” and “You are valued”? Teaching in urban and culturally diverse schools is all about how we’re able to connect with our students with genuine relationships that build an alliance. The best educators you’ll ever see are able to communicate and motivate different types of people in different types of situations. This is a critical component to transformational student achievement as relationship-building with your students establishes the necessary connection needed to impact all other areas of the classroom. We’re talking about genuine relationships that result in students wanting to work harder for both themselves, and you. This session empowers everyone that is a part of the learning environment with the strategies needed to be self-reflective and create a more inclusive environment for all. All meaning all.

Play Deficit Disorder: A Worldwide Crisis and How to Solve It Locally with Dr. Gray

Grades K-12

Research in the United States and elsewhere has revealed a dramatic decline in children’s free play—especially their free outdoor play—over the past several decades. This decline in play has been accompanied by well-documented, dramatic increases in childhood depression, anxiety, and suicide, and by declines in internal locus of control and creativity. In this talk I will present the logic and evidence behind my claim that the decline in free play is a, if not the, major cause of these deleterious effects on children’s and emerging adults’ emotional, social, and intellectual wellbeing. I will also describe ways by which families, neighborhoods, schools, and communities can restore children’s opportunities for play.
